Mobiles recovered from jails

Lucknow: Mobile phones, knives and pornographic CDs were recovered from several district jails across Uttar Pradesh during a surprise check conducted on Saturday, according to police sources.

They said senior administrative and police officials conducted surprise checks at all district and central jails in the state.

Cell phones, sim cards, chargers, knives, cash and pornographic CDs were recovered from prisons in Meerut, Faizabad and Basti districts, the sources said.

A cell phone along with a charger was recovered from a Samajwadi Party leader Vikas Yadav, who is lodged in Basti jail on charges of murder, they said.

The raids came in the wake of reports that incarcerated criminals had been operating their gangs from inside prisons through mobile phones, sources said.

Recently a dreaded criminal Mangal Singh, who was lodged in a Varanasi jail, had called up traders to pay protection money to his goons, they said.

Official sources, however, termed Saturday’s raids as a “routine process”. Raids were conducted at Meerut, Saharanpur, Pilibhit, Bareilly, Mirzapur, Azamgarh, Varanasi, Bhadohi, Pratapgarh, Ballia, Faizabad and jails elsewhere, the sources said. -- PTI
