NEW DELHI: An underground reservoir of one lakh gallon capacity and a chaupal were inaugurated by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit at Basant Gaon near Vasant Enclave in South Delhi on Saturday. Ms. Dikshit, who is also Chairperson of the Delhi Jal Board, said her Government was committed to providing drinking water facility to all the residents and was making efforts to obtain raw water from Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. “Raw water is expected from the Renuka Dam in Himachal Pradesh,” she said, adding that there was bound to be a substantial improvement in the water supply position in the coming years. She also urged the people to avoid wastage of drinking water as it was very precious. The underground reservoir is important for Basant Gaon as it is an urbanised village situated in an undulating and rocky terrain because of which there is a ground level difference between various pockets that makes equitable water supply a challenging task. However, due to its prime location and the high density of population there has been a major increase in the demand for water. To improve the water supply position, the Delhi Jal Board has constructed an additional underground reservoir with a booster pumping station of 1 lakh gallon capacity and laid a kilometre-long water pipeline for the village at an estimated cost of Rs.80 lakh. The newly constructed reservoir has enhanced the existing storage capacity from 50,000 gallons to 1.5 lakh gallons. With the commissioning of the underground reservoir and booster pumping station, all pockets of Basant Gaon are now covered with filtered water supply. Ms. Dikshit said the Delhi Government would also provide better amenities in the Capital’s rural and urbanised villages. The new chaupal at Basant Gaon that has been constructed at a cost of Rs. 35 lakh would be used for holding social and community functions.
