Narrow escape for bus passengers

RTC bus stops short of falling into the Musi, driver injured

Perched precariously: Mahabubnagar-bound APSRTC bus hanging loose at the Imlibun bus station on Saturday after the driver lost control and nearly plunged into the Musi.

HYDERABAD: Thirty-six passengers of an APSRTC bus had a narrow escape here on Saturday when it stopped short of falling into Musi river after ramming the compound wall of Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS).

None of the passengers, except the bus driver, A. Mannan of Mahbubnagar depot, was injured. But all of them slipped into delirium having escaped from certain death. A woman carrying a child fell unconscious for sometime. She, however, recovered within minutes and was sent to her destination in another bus.

The Mahbubnagar-bound bus started off from the platform around 4 p.m. “The driver failed to see an oncoming bus of Miryalaguda and hit it while turning right,” Afzalgunj police station Inspector P. Rameshaiah said. The bus driver Mannan fell off his seat in the driver cabin even as the bus grazed past another bus of Karnataka State.

Passengers panic

Even before the driver could rise and take control of the steering wheel, it hit the compound wall abutting the Musi and came to halt after the front left wheel crossed the wall hanging in the air. Panicked passengers started screaming for help. While some jumped out by breaking open the window panes, others came out through the door. Eyewitnesses said the compound wall, built with rocks, averted a major accident as it could withstand the impact of the collision and stopped the bus preventing it from falling into the Musi. No case was registered.
