THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Town Planning committee of the City Corporation on Saturday issued notice to the owners and tenants of the building housing the Spencer’s supermarket, near University College, for violation of the approved building plan. Committee chairman R. Satheeshkumar said an inspection of the building revealed diversion of the space earmarked for car parking in the basement. The inspection team found that the entire basement was walled off and converted into separate modules for packing the goods sold in the supermarket. The vehicles bringing customers to the building were parked on the road, causing traffic congestion in the area. The notice directed the owners of the building to demolish the unauthorised structures and restore the parking area. The committee also identified setback violations in many of the buildings lining the narrow road from the Padmatheertham pond to East Fort. Meanwhile, the Corporation has decided to take up a project to identify land to set up parking lots along the most congested stretch of M.G. Road from Statue to East Fort. Councillors and officials of the Town Planning Department have been asked to identify plots.
