NEW DELHI: K. Sasikiran escaped with a draw against Cuba’s Lenier Dominguez Perez in the sixth round of the Aerosvit chess tournament in Foros, Ukraine, on Saturday. Playing black, Sasikiran employed aggressive tactics in this Sicilian Najdorf game and sacrificed a rook for a bishop in order to felicitate his kingside offensive. However, Perez defended accurately and then held the upper hand in the second half of the game. Eventually, Sasikiran was extremely lucky to escape with a draw. Draws on all six boards kept the standings unchanged with Sergey Karjakin heading the table with four points. With four rounds to go, action will resume on Monday after a day’s rest. The results (sixth round): Lenier-Dominguez Perez (Cub, 3) drew with K. Sasikiran (2.5); Peter Svidler (Rus, 3) drew with Sergey Karjakin (Ukr, 4); Loek van Wely (Ned, 3) drew with Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr, 3.5); Alexei Shirov (Esp, 3) drew with Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu ( Rom, 2); Sergei Rublevsky (Rus, 3) drew with Alexander Onischuk (USA, 3); Pavel Eljanov (Ukr, 3) drew with Dmitry Jakovenko (Rus, 3).
