No stopping Maharashtra

Special Correspondent

MARGAO: The Maharashtra juggernaut rolled on, regardless of the sharp showers, as it maintained its superiority in the 24th sub-junior National swimming championship with a whopping tally of 355 points at the Fatorda pool here on Sunday. Karnataka finished a distant second with 271 points.

However, the Karnataka contingent had reasons to smile as both the individual honours in the girls’ section (group III and group IV) went to its swimmers — Pratima Kullali and S. Prajwala respectively.

Yudhishthir shines

In the boys’ group III event, Maharashtra’s Yudhishthir Jaisingh (24 points) walked away with the honours, while in group IV it was the diminutive Sagar Kumar from Assam who finished first with 25 points.

With rains lashing relentlessly, the organisers went through the day’s proceedings with an eye on the clouds. But the swimmers — Sonu Yadav (U.P.), Kavya Bhandekar (Maharashtra) and Karnataka’s Pratima Kullali — had set upon to beat the rains and the clock.

Sonu Yadav of U.P. improved upon Sagar Patil’s four-year-old mark in the 100m backstroke for boys’ group III with a timing of 01:12.09 as against Sagar’s (01:12.61s), while Kavya was a fraction of a second ahead of Surabhi Tipre’s 2005 mark in the 100m backstroke in the girls’ group III event, clocking 01:14.88s.

Surabhi Tipre’s another record too fell today as the strongly-built Pratima Kullali from the K.C. Reddy Swim Centre eclipsed her mark with an effort of 01:04.99s in the girls’ group III 100m freestyle event. Tipre’s record was 01:06.17s.
