Anand, Kramnik sign peace treaty

NEW DELHI: Top seed Viswanathan Anand started his campaign in the prestigious Sparkassen Chess Meeting 2007 with a comfortable draw against World champion Vladimir Kramnik at the Dortmund Civic Theater, Dortmund, on Saturday.

In the lone decisive game of the eight-player field, Azerbaijan’s Shakhriyar Mamedyarov defeated home challenger Arkadij Naiditsch in 44 moves.

The Kramnik-Anand game in Slav Defence ended in 35 moves after the players had a queen and an equal number of pawns on the board. A series of exchanges kept the positioned balanced and eventually led to an expected draw.

The results (first round): Vladimir Kramnik (Rus) drew with Viswanathan Anand; Boris Gelfand (Isr) drew with Evgeny Alekseev (Rus); Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Aze) bt Arkadij Naiditsch (Ger); Magnus Carlsen (Nor) drew with Peter Leko (Hun) .

Second round pairings: Anand-Leko; Naiditsch-Carlsen; Alekseev-Mamedyarov; Kramnik-Gelfand.
