Judicial officers moot mediation centres in courts

“Frequent reference of the same case to the centre would be allowed only based on merit”

Seeking clarification: A judicial officer posing a question at a workshop in Tiruchi on Saturday.

TIRUCHI: Judicial officers of Tiruchi and Perambalur districts, attending in a three-day ‘district-level continuing education workshop’ organised by the Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy, Chennai, here, have mooted a plan to set up mediation centres in their courts, to ensure expeditious disposal of pending cases.

Impressed by their inclination to take maximum advantage of the concept of the Mediation and Conciliation Centre functioning in Chennai, Judge of the Madras High Court, V. Dhanapalan, and Director of the Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy, S. Vimala, appreciated their enthusiasm for ensuring speedy justice.

Visiting Consultant to the Academy, N.R. Madhav Menon, too was impressed with their concern.

Centre sanctioned

Earlier, First Additional District Judge, Tiruchi, V. Ramamurthy, said though a centre was sanctioned in the city a couple of years ago, it was yet to take off.

Judicial Magistrate, Fast Track Court II, Tiruchi, P. Jayabalan, asked whether a dispute could be directly taken up by the mediation centre, without being routed through a court of law.

Judicial Magistrate, Musiri, M. Suba Anbumani, sought to know whether the centre could take up a single case more than once.

Senior advocate from Chennai, Mr. Sriram Panchu, in his reply, clarified that Sec. 89 of the Common Procedure Code permitted only pending cases, that too with the consent of the litigants.

Frequent reference of the same case to the centre would be allowed only based on merit.
