Coimbatore: The City Police Commissioner, C.K. Gandhirajan, on Saturday inaugurated a programme for training volunteers of the Road Safety Patrol (RSP) from schools.

As part of the ongoing efforts to streamline traffic on city roads, the police have embarked on a multi-pronged strategy. One of the efforts would be to form RSP in each school. The objective was to train the volunteers in regulating traffic near school zones. The man-power starved police machinery would not be able to deploy personnel at every place. The volunteers besides helping the police would be thorough with road rules and also disseminate knowledge on road rules to fellow students.

As a first step, with the help of the Chief Educational Officer, S. Karmegam, the police have initiated the concept of road safety in 154 schools. To begin with, RSPs had been formed in 24 schools by enlisting the services of 30 students in each school primarily from 9th and 11th Standard. On Saturday, the police took up training of RSP volunteers from eight schools. The students were given pamphlets and handbills on road safety. They were trained on road safety and signs shown by traffic constables while regulating traffic. These students would be deployed near the schools to regulate traffic, parking and help fellow students in crossing the road.

They took a pledge to educate motorists on the need for obeying road rules. The training would be a continuous affair, Mr. Gandhirajan said. A rally would be held in the city by the RSP volunteers and they would be issued identity cards. The Deputy Commissioners of Police, R. Tamil Chandran (Crime), and S.V. Karuppasamy (Headquarters), gave away training materials and gadgets to the students. The Additional Deputy Commissioner (Traffic Planning and Development), A. Amir Basha, Assistant Commissioners of Police S. Balraj (Traffic East), M. Chinnadurai (Traffic West), and V. Muthusamy (Crime Record Bureau) and others have been entrusted with the job of roping in more schools to take part in the programme.
