KOCHI: Kerala has great potential and can contribute better to the growth of the animation industry, said speakers at a seminar organised by Image Infotainment Limited here on Sunday. The seminar was organised as part of an ongoing nation-wide campaign to increase the awareness of the animation industry and career opportunities for youth. The animation industry in India has grown by 25 per cent in 2006 in comparison to the figures in 2005. According to NASSCOM, the revenue generated by the industry would reach US $ 869 million by 2010 from $ 354 million in 2006, said Natraj, chief academic officer, ICAT, Chennai. The United States of America and Europe constituted the biggest market for the Indian animation industry, he said. India had emerged as a key one-stop destination for game development. The gaming industry in India was likely to reach $ 424.6 million by 2010 from a mere $ 4.5 million in 2004. The award-winning film ‘Banzi’ was screened at the seminar. ICAT had won this year’s NASSCOM Animation Super Pitch Award. The seminar said the State Government’s initiative to set up a film and video park as well as a Special Economic Zone for animation would help make Kerala an animation hub. The presence of Keralites in creative industries across the country proved that the people here were highly creative. The seminar was targeted at youngsters who wished to be part of the animation industry. Chandrasekharan, head of DQ Entertainment Limited, Hyderabad, shared his experience with the audience. The animation company had worked on international projects for Walt Disney, Nickelodeon, Sony pictures, Magic Dreams LLC, etc. Philip Thomas, regional manager, Institute of Multimedia, Arts & Graphic Effects (IMAGE) Infotainment Limited, evinced interest in investing in the State. At present, the firm has offices in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Kochi, Thrissur and Kozhikode.
