Apropos the remarks of UPA’s Presidential candidate Pratibha Patil regarding the introduction of the veil system in India (The Hindu, June 18, 2007). I wonder whether she has read only the history of the country rewritten by Hindu revivalists. Mughals were the first among the Muslim rulers of India who developed strong relations with the Hindus . The Maharani of Chittoor sent ‘Rakhi’ (the symbol of love of a sister to her brother) to Humayun, the second Mughal ruler and Akbar, married ‘Jodha Bai’, a princess of Mewar. It is wrong to say that the veil system in India was started to save Hindu women from the Mughals. If it attracted Hindu women too it was up to them. ATM Anwar, Purani Haveli Road widening proposal
The proposed 100 feet road from Safilguda railway station towards and up to Jyothinagar will affect the residents . Further, extension of 30’ on either side to the existing 40’ road will drastically result in demolition of houses and newly constructed apartments too. The residents, mostly middle class people who have invested their hard-earned money and some of them being pensioners, are totally upset with the unjustified, irrational proposal of extension of present 40’ road which is of adequate width for more than two RTC buses to cross through simultaneously. Even from the claims set out by authorities, existing 40’ road can be conveniently utilised if all the encroachments, hoardings, ramps are removed to ensure smooth flow of traffic and avoid congestion. P. Kasivisweswara Rao, Maljakgiri Have symbols
Different segments / depot buses of the Andhra Pradesh State Road display their area either in full or abbreviated letters along with a relevant depiction. For instance corporation buses of MBNR (Mahabubnagar) Depart exhibit the age-old ‘Pillalamarri tree’, Vemulavada buses with ‘shivalinga’, and Warnagal buses with ‘thousand-pillar temple arch’ and so on. For example FM(Falaknuma) depot buses may exhibit Charminar diagram, BKP (Barkatpura) depot buses with ‘Bhavishyanidni building’ which is related to lakhs of private employees, University of Hyderabad (UoH) depot buses with the university logo / symbol and so on. This will impress upon such segment / area prominence to the people in general, and tourists in particular. Kothapalil Mallesh, Sanjeeva Reddy Nagar
