Man drowns, alert sounded along River Noyyal

Special Correspondent

Storage in Siruvani Dam keeps rising

Nature’s bounty: Heavy flow of water in the River Noyyal near the city following torrential rain in the Western Ghats.

COIMBATORE: A man drowned in the Chithiraichavadi Anicut, more than 20 km west of the city, on Sunday as torrential rain in the Western Ghats brought heavy inflow into the River Noyyal.

Raja (26) of Pooluvapatti had gone with his friends to bathe in the anicut. He was said to have got stuck in slush and drowned. His body was recovered.

District administration authorities continued to warn people in low level areas, especially along the river and other water bodies, of a spate that could cost them their lives or property. They urged people to shift to safer places. With the Noyyal in spate, the officials sounded an alert along its course, right from Alandurai.

The causeway across the Noyyal at Chadivayal was submerged. A strong flow of water discouraged people from walking on it and also kept light vehicles away. River Bhavani was also in spate at Mettupalayam as the discharge of water from the Pilloor Dam continued. A causeway at Chavadiyur was also submerged. This left villagers of more than 30 tribal hamlets cut off from the town.

Coimbatore city and the suburbs and also Tirupur experienced very little to no rain at all on Sunday. The sun was out for most part of the day.

Heavy rain

As heavy rain continued to lash the catchments in the Siruvani hills, water level kept rising in the Siruvani Dam on Sunday also. After the 300 mm rain on Saturday, the dam recorded 140 mm on Sunday and provided hopes to the local bodies that were dependent of the Siruvani drinking water scheme of a quick rise in the storage.

Water level was said to have risen by more than six feet on Sunday and reach almost 33 ft, as against the full reservoir level of 67.44 ft.

The rainfall across the district (in mm till 8 a.m. on Sunday) was: Siruvani Dam: 140, Siruvani foothills-80, Valparai Taluk-33, Valparai-31, Parambikulam-Aliyar Project-33, Cincona-28, Chinnakallar-91, Sholayar-36.2, Pollachi-41, Kadamparai-22, Upper Nirar-91, Lower Nirar-42, Vettaikaranpudur-10, Palladam-4.2, Udumalpet-5.6, Amaravathi-1, Thirumurthi-3, Sulur-4, Coimbatore Airport-1.5 and TNAU-10.
