Human rights council’s plea to Government

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Human Rights Council on Saturday urged the Government to enforce the ban on arrack in the State only after making alternative arrangements for the livelihood of lakhs of people depending upon the production and sale of arrack. Council president S.K. Vivekananda told presspersons here that the Government’s decision had not taken into account the plight of those affected by the ban. It should not forget that the retail sellers of arrack did have the right to life and the Government should chalk out a proper plan before implementing the ban. The council was not against the ban and was well aware of the ill-effects of arrack consumption. However, before taking the decision, the Government should have consulted all the stake-holders in the industry and planned alternative arrangements, he said.
