Relief: High Court dismisses appeal
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Friday dismissed an appeal by the State against the grant of Rs. 3 lakh as compensation to a man who was illegally kept in jail for several months even after his sentence was remitted.
A Division Bench comprising Justice S.R. Bannurmath and Justice Jawad Rahim confirmed an order of a single judge granting compensation of Rs. 3 lakh to Hanumanthappa.
On December 5, 2006, the single judge had directed the State Government to put into place within six months the mechanism for setting up a State Human Rights Commission and awarded cost of Rs. 3 lakh to Hanumanthappa for his illegal detention in jail even after his release.
On January 14, 1987, Hanumanthappa was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Shimoga court and on January 17 he was shifted to Bangalore Central Jail.
On September 2, 1998, he gave a representation to the authorities for remission of the sentence.
On September 4, he along with 137 others were recommended for release.
The Bench dismissed the appeal.
