KANNUR: Steel Industrials Kerala Ltd. (SILK) unit at Azhikkal here will reposition it as a small vessel building unit and strengthen its post-sales service facility. SILK Managing Director B. Sreekumar told a press conference here on Thursday that the Azhikkal unit would again turn to ship-building activities after some break during which the unit focussed on ship-breaking. The unit had now secured orders for building eight passenger vessels with a capacity to accommodate 75 passengers each, he said adding that six of the orders were from the Kerala Water Transport Department (WTD) and two from the Forest Department. Each vessel was estimated to cost Rs.37 lakh, he said. Mr. Sreekumar said Industries Minister Elamaram Karim would inaugurate the keel laying ceremony at the unit on Monday. The first vessel would be built in 100 days.
