Water supply suspended for two days in Tiruchi

S. Ganesan

TIRUCHI: There has been a major breakdown in the city’s drinking water supply network owing to a burst in distribution mains running across the Uyyakondan River near Cantonment. Large parts of the city will go without water supply on Monday and Tuesday.

The pipeline, carrying almost half of the city’s water supply, was damaged on Sunday while erecting piles on the river bed for widening the Chettipalam (bridge) across the river. The distribution main carries about 40 million litres a day (MLD) from Kambarasampettai collector well, out of the city’s total supply of 89 MLD.

Pumping of water to about 20 overhead tanks in various parts of the city, including those at Thillai Nagar, Anna Nagar, Cantonment, Junction, Karumandapam and Khajapettai, has been hit. Consequently, residents in Thillai Nagar, Puthur, Vayalur Road, Shanmuga Nagar, Uyyakondan Thirumalai, Kumaran Nagar, Srinivasa Nagar, Ramalinga Nagar, Ramalinga Nagar South, Thennur, Anna Nagar, Andakondan, Bheema Nagar, Cantonment, Junction, Khajapettai, Palakkarai, Eda Street, Karumandapam, Ponnagar, Periamilaguparai, Chinnamilaguparai, Mudaliar Chathram and Sethuraman Pillai Colony would not get water supply on Monday and Tuesday.

Corporation officials said that the work would go on round the clock to replace the damaged portion of the pipeline that runs six feet beneath the river bed. The pipeline is to be replaced for about six metres.

Though there has been no water release in the river currently, Corporation officials had to contend with gushing ground water while digging the trenches around the damaged portion of the pipeline.

Officials expect to replace the damaged pipelines by Monday evening.

However, pumping of water could commence late on Monday night or early morning on Tuesday and it would take some time to fill the overhead tanks. Officials assured supply could be resumed positively on Wednesday.
