Two-day workshop held

Two monographs released
Importance of bio-shields highlighted

CHENNAI: Two monographs on understanding disaster and first aid were released at the inaugural function of a two-day national workshop on Community Based Disaster Preparedness jointly organised by Loyola College, Pazhaverkadu Action Network and CORDAID of The Netherlands recently.

Chief Conservator of Forest S. Balaji underlined the need for measures to minimise manmade disasters. Environmental sustainability could be achieved only if the country mainstreamed ecological considerations.

According to him, steps taken to reduce air pollution have lead to some improvement in the ozone hole. On the protection of coastlines from disasters, he said though engineering design structures such as groynes were suitable, they were expensive. Bio-shields such as mangroves could act as a good buffer against rough seas.

Mr. Balaji said, in the last three years, the Forest Department had developed 2,000 hectares of shelter belts along the Tamil Nadu coast and assisted in mangrove regeneration for over 600 hectares every year.

Loyola College Principal Albert Muthumalai, CORDAID Consultant Maja Pavlov, College Secretary S. Peter, Rector P. Amal Kulandaisamy and project co-ordinator M. Selvanayagam spoke.
