Having a blast: Residents of SOS Chatnath Homes, East Tambaram, performing the “The story of Karna” in Chennai on Saturday.
TAMBARAM: ‘The story of Karna’ performed by children of SOS Chatnath Homes in East Tambaram was the highlight of SOS Day celebrations on Saturday. The performance featured 37 children donning different roles. Volunteers at Chatnath Homes said SOS Day was observed every year in memory of Hermann Gmeiner, the founder of the movement. The play centred around Karna’s character and his role in the Mahabharatha. The aim of the play was to express the protagonist’s yearning for affection, volunteers said. The play was directed by Kumarane Valavane, a Tamilian by birth hailing from Karaikal and now a French citizen. The play will be performed again at Alliance Francaise in Chennai on July 8, the director said. Since its inception in 1979, Chatnath Homes has taken care of 366 children, S. Jagannath, advisor, said. “In SOS Children’s villages, orphaned children in groups of about 10 are brought up as a family unit under the care of a mother. The children are looked after until they receive university education. Vocational training is imparted to those who are unable to pursue higher education.”
