Two bridges to be opened today

Staff Reporter

KANNUR: Two bridges, which link two islands with the mainland, will be opened by Public Works Minister T.U. Kuruvila in the district on Monday

The bridge across the Koralayi river, a tributary of the Valapattanam river, has been a long-cherished dream of the residents of Koralayi island in Mayyil panchayat. With the opening of the bridge on Monday, they will get road access to Eranhikkadavu and from there to Mayyil, Taliparamba and the district headquarters. They have been relying on country boat ferry to reach these places. Ferrying is accident-prone during monsoon.

The cost of the NABARD-aided bridge is Rs. 315 lakh. The five-span bridge is 112 metre long and 7.5 metre wide and has a 1.5-metre footpath.

The Minister will inaugurate another bridge that connects Therlayi island in Chengalayi panchayat to Kurumathur-Therthala. NABARD had provided financial aid for this Rs. 95-lakh project too. The bridge’s length is 79.8 metres and it is 5.15 metre wide.
