Though the district authorities have launched a crackdown on sand-mining, nothing much seems to be happening barring a few raids here and there. The whole issue has become ridiculous, as one sees sand piling up at construction sites of multi-storey complexes. Construction is an integral part of development and cannot be stalled. Therefore, before restricting sand-mining, the Government should think of finding an alternative source. Granite powder may be a suitable substitute, but granite quarries too will become extinct in the near future. Trying out beach sand will not be a remedy. Therefore, the only solution is to import sand from the Rajasthan deserts. Bulk quantities can be shipped across the Kandla port in Gujarat in containers and then handled according to the requirement along the various individual ports concerned.. The sand can be later transhipped to various destinations by road or rail services. J.J. Vellara Kozhikode.
