Says situation under control

KOTTAYAM: The issue of providing financial assistance to the next of kin of those who died in the outbreak of fever in parts of the State will be taken up by the Cabinet in its next meeting, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said on Sunday.

Mr. Achuthanandan was on a whirlwind tour of the district to get first-hand information on the fever outbreak.

In an informal chat with mediapersons after his meeting with district and Health Department authorities here, Mr. Achuthanandan said no death had occurred on account of chikungunya in the district as per the report of the Health authorities.

The fever outbreak was under control. The health authorities in the district were helped by their counterparts from Government Medical College Hospitals in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode.

The monsoon too played a role in bringing the fever cases under control, he said

The district registered 1,61,099 cases of viral fever during the recent outbreak according to records available with the district authorities, Mr. Achuthanandan said.

Monsoon calamity

The Government had taken steps to extend financial assistance to those affected by the monsoon, he said. As many as 1,576 relief camps had been opened.

Free ration and medical facilities would be provided to the affected persons, he said.

Mr. Achuthanandan who was accompanied by Minister for Finance T.M. Thomas Isaac and Minister for Transport Mathew T. Thomas later left for Mundakayam and visited the Government hospital there. K Suresh Kurup, MP, and V.N. Vasavan and K J Alphonse, MLAs, also accompanied Mr. Achuthanandan.

He left for Pathanamthitta from Mundakayam.
