Good inflow: Minister for Water Resources K.S. Eshwarappa with his wife and officials at the main dam of the Upper Tunga Project in Gajanur near Shimoga on Sunday.
SHIMOGA: Minister for Water Resources K.S. Eshwarappa said on Sunday that the Government had taken steps to meet any eventuality in the wake of heavy rain lashing many parts of the State. Addressing presspersons at Gajnur, about 10 km from here, after performing “Ganga puja” at the main dam of the Upper Tunga Project (UTP) along with his wife Jayalakshmi, he said that flash floods caused by incessant rain might have caused heavy losses in many places. Routine visit
Referring to the recent visit of Bharatiya Janata Party leader Yashwant Sinha to Bangalore, he said that it was a routine visit and there was no need to attach any special importance to it. On the reported dissatisfaction among some party workers over the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, he said that he was not aware of what they had complained to Mr. Yashwant Sinha. ‘No ambiguity’
Stating that there was no difference of opinion in the party, Mr. Eshwarappa said that Mr. Yediyurappa was the “unquestioned” leader of the party and that he was certain to become the next Chief Minister. “There is no ambiguity about it,” he added. When his attention was drawn to the scarcity of cement and other building material in the State, he said that he would ask the Principal Secretary for Major Industries to arrange a meeting with the managements of cement factories in the State to find out the reasons for it. He would also discuss the matter with Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Mr. Yediyurappa, he said. Cement factories in the State should be asked to compulsorily earmark part of their production for use in Karnataka, he said. Mr. Eshwarappa said that the implementation of development projects such as dams, bridges, and roads all over the State might have led to the scarcity of cement. Increasing cement production appeared to be the only solution to the scarcity, Mr. Eshwarappa said.
