BHUBANESWAR: In order to give a fresh momentum to the compensatory afforestation programme in the State, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday asked the Forest Department to take up afforestation over one lakh hectares during the current fiscal. Mr. Patnaik, who holds the forest portfolio, issued the orders while chairing a meeting to review the progress in various schemes being implemented by the department. Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Patnaik underlined the need to intensify the afforestation programme and other labour intensive work with a view to create employment opportunities for the people living in forest areas. The plantation drive and other works such as creating water bodies inside forests could create employment opportunities for about 2.5 lakh families in the State, Mr. Patnaik said. The authorities decided to involve 2500 self-help groups that exist in forest belts across the State in dairy and horticulture programmes.
