Water-logging in Cuttack town

I thank your correspondent who has rightly feared that there would be water-logging in Cuttack town with the arrival of monsoon (The Hindu dt.5-6-2007).

The desilting process of drains has not been completed as the beds of those drains are chokes with mud. Further, the century-old water-bodies, ponds, small lakes and pools which were storing excess rainwater have been filled with earth and converted to homestead lands by builders for making it available for residential buildings.

Clear stand needed

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik seems to be acting like Public Relations Officer of a big multi-national company.

Whenever the Chief Minister appears on television commenting on any issue, the only thing he says is: ‘we will look into it’. He has never come out making his stand clear in most of the issues. Snehasish Dhal,

Appoint staff for children’s hospital

The children’s hospital at Shishu Bhavan, Cuttack, is the only specialised hospital in the State to treat children suffering from serious ailments.

There are 126 beds.

Though there is necessity of 24 doctors for the six units, the Health Department has created only 18 posts.

Similarly no action has been initiated for filling 30 posts of Nurse which were created recently.

The Japan government had donated Rs.34 crores for construction of new block in the said hospital and had also donated sophisticated medical equipment for treatment of patients.

But due to non-sanction of specialised doctor posts in key areas, those costly equipments are going to be damaged as there are no medical experts to handle those equipments.

As a matter of fact, there is urgent need to create posts in microbiology, pathology, biochemistry, radiology so that the hospital can be full-fledged.

The Health Department should take immediate action to create and fill-up above posts so that the lives of children can be saved.

See POSCO project in perspective

It is two years since POSCO signed a MoU with the State Government for setting up a steel plant near Paradeep. But the project has not taken off at the ground level, thanks to some opposition leaders in the State.

The Central Government, understanding the importance of the POSCO project, billed one with the biggest FDI in the country so far, has been keeping a close watch on the project’s progress. Nearly all clearances have been accorded to the POSCO project but due to resistance by a few locals the project work has been stalled.

But, these locals are not opposing it on their own but are being instigated by some vested interests and political parties.

That is why, while the Congress at the Centre has been supporting the BJD-BJP coalition Government in Orissa for the POSCO project, State Congress leader J.B Patnaik is leading other small parties to oppose the project.

The party, surely, will lose its credibility with people as it is going against their own party to oppose what is of people’s interest.

It is high time the people saw through the statements of political leaders.

They should also understood the double benefits of the project which would could ultimately be set up with their support and for their benefit.
