BJD demand follows violent incident at Patrapur Arson was planned to destroy files, says Congress
BERHAMPUR: As a follow-up of the violent incidents at Patrapur, a tussle has started between the BJD and the Congress over the demand for shifting government offices from Patrapur. The BJD cadres of the district handed over a memorandum to the Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC), southern division, demanding shifting of block office, tehsil office and other government offices at Patrapur to some other ‘safe place’. Patrapur is part of the Chikiti Assembly constituency. The delegation of BJD activists included around 20 elected panchayat body members of the constituency. They were led by district BJD general secretary, Jagannath Sabat and its vice-president Uma Nayak. The BJD cadres are of the opinion that due to the activities of some Congress supporters, Patrapur is no more a safe place to have government offices. But the Congress leaders of the district opposed this demand by BJD workers. Former Congress MLA of Chikiti, who was Speaker of the State Assembly, Chintamani Dyansamantra held a press meet in the city on Sunday to oppose this demand by BJD cadres. According to him shifting of block and tehsil offices from Patrapur following recent violence would be a slap on the pride of the people of the area. "Parliament was not shifted to some other place from New Delhi following terrorist attack on it, how are BJD cadres thinking to make Patrapur devoid of government offices," he said. Probe sought
Mr Samantra like leaders of the BJD and the BJP also demanded a high-level probe into the happenings at Patrapur on June 14. He alleged that the arson at block and tehsil offices was a planned effort to destroy files that could have revealed corruption at these offices. He said BJD MLA of Chikiti Usha Devi was not taking up the issue of continuing vacancy of doctors at Patrapur neither on the floor of the Assembly nor with the Chief Minister. He demanded that Ms Devi resign from her post as she had failed to deliver her duty towards the electorate. According to him police should stop mass arrests in relation to the Patrapur incident to end harassment of general public.
