KOCHI: The State Government will soon consider the feasibility report for setting up an aqua park at Kadungalloor in Ernakulam district. A U.K.-based consultant, Kishen Rana, appointed by the Government, is understood to have submitted the report. The proposal is for setting up the project under a public-private partnership, targeting the export market. According to experts associated with the project, an export hub for ornamental fish would be set up at Kadungalloor on six hectares of land. Satellite farms and clusters, which would serve as fish-fattening centres, would be set up in various parts of the State. The satellite farms would be responsible for the collection of fish from the clusters. Clusters would be allotted to houses, cooperatives and other units. The State Government plans to breed and export at least 10-crore ornamental fish during the next five years. Though the market potential of the State in breeding ornamental fish has not been ascertained, experts says it will throw open employment opportunities and bring additional revenue. In the initial stage, the focus of the park will be on bread-and-butter species such as gold fish, guppy and angel. The high-value freshwater fish such as aravana, oscar and discuss would also be bred and exported.
