Special Correspondent
Thiruvananthapuram: A fact-finding team of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, headed by its president, Ramesh Chennithala, has expressed concern about what it calls the Government’s pullout from Munnar evictions. At a press conference here on Sunday, Mr. Chennithala, along with members of the KPCC sub-committee on evictions, said the Congress had welcomed the strong steps taken by the Special Task Force against encroachers in the hill station. However, confusion prevailed there over the eviction process as a result of the row over demolition of the Communist Party of India’s office and advent of Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran as head of another eviction team comprising Revenue officials. The fact-finding team visited Munnar on Saturday to evaluate the eviction process. Thalekunnil Basheer, chairman of the KPCC sub-committee, said the eviction process had come to a standstill. Local leaders of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) were involved in large-scale encroachments. These included encroachments by M.M. Lambodaran, brother of party district secretary M.M. Mani, and Chinakanal panchayat member of the CPI(M) Albin. The Revenue Minister’s eviction programme clearly indicated the presence of a mini-Left Democratic Front coalition under the leadership of a section of the CPI(M) and the CPI.
