“India can do more to secure Suu Kyi’s release”

SINGAPORE:

Aung San Suu Kyi

SINGAPORE: The Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) is addressing “a general plea” to China and India to “contribute to the process of an early solution to the imprisonment of Aung San Suu Kyi,” Myanmar’s celebrated democracy campaigner. Myanmar is an ASEAN member.

ASEAN Secretary-General Ong Keng Yong on Sunday told The Hindu here that “India can do a bit more for us” in securing the freedom of Ms. Suu Kyi.

The ASEAN was aware of India’s “constraint”, “but we will find a way-out.”

Asked whether the ASEAN really wanted India to provide asylum to Ms. Suu Kyi as in the case of Dalai Lama, Mr. Ong laughed and said: “We do not know. … We have not yet developed any specific ideas with regard to how we would engage India” to secure the Nobel Peace laureate’s release.

No evidence

The ASEAN had not seen any evidence on the speculation that Myanmar’s military junta might now be exploring the possibility of embarking on a nuclear-weapons programme.
