‘Shraddhanjali’ for ‘Hamsadhwani’ founder

CHENNAI: An admirable administrator, cricket enthusiast and connoisseur of classical fine arts —artists and friends of R. Ramachandran, founder-secretary of the music sabha ‘Hamsadhwani’, recalled the multifaceted person he was, at ‘Shraddhanjali’ a tribute organised here on Saturday.

Carnatic vocalist Sudha Raghunathan said Mr. Ramachandran was vibrantly enthusiastic in thought and deed, contagiously effervescent, soft in ways and gentle in speech. His speeches delivered with an impeccable, clipped accent were scholarly, peppered with wit and wisdom, she said, adding that she cherished his candid remarks about her performances.

S.P. Ambrose, founder, Adyar Times, said he had left behind a legacy that needed to be cherished and nourished.

Editor-in-Chief of Sruti Magazine K.V. Ramanathan, who was Mr. Ramachandran’s junior in P.S. High School, said as juniors, he and his batchmates had great regard and affection for Mr. Ramachandran.

The Managing Director of The Hindu N. Murali said Mr. Ramachandran’s amiable personality, dignity and decorum were striking.

“He lived a full life,” he said, adding, “All of us admire and aspire to have his dedication, leadership qualities and organisational skills.” Mr. Ramachandran served the The Hindu for over two decades and wa s known for his mastery of the language.

Recalling a poignant episode during his visit to the hospital, Mr. Murali said: “He was so meticulous that he was writing down the announcements about programmes to be held at his sabha that had to be published in the following day’s newspapers, on the blank side of his prescription.”
