Special Correspondent
Thiruvananthapuram: The Communist Marxist Party (CMP), a partner in the United Democratic Front (UDF), on Sunday adopted a new strategy to consolidate its strength by merging its All India Centre for Trade Unions (AICTU) with the independent Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS). More than 1.5 lakh workers owing allegiance to the AICTU merged with the independent trade union that has a massive following in five major sectors, including railways, ports and airports. The formal merger came into effect when AICTU State president M.K. Kannan made the merger proclamation and State general secretary K.K. Nanu received the HMS flag from sabha State president K.V. Narayanan. Mr. Kannan was elected working president and CMP leader C.P. John senior secretary. The former Cooperation Minister and CMP general secretary M.V. Raghavan, who inaugurated the conference, explained the rationale of merger coming as it did in the context of the Left parties’ failure to address the problems faced by agriculture workers and those in other sectors. The working class did not have a future unless they threw out the Left parties that claimed to oppose globalisation without doing any thing for this section. Mr. Raghavan alleged that the Munnar encroachments proved that the Left parties had come to represent the affluent class. They had degenerated to such an extent that they were going all out to protect their respective party offices. He maintained that the CPI had created bogus title deeds in the name of the late P,K, Vasudevan Nair. He also did not spare the CPI (M) for letting out its office premises to run a resort. HMS president Thampan Thomas urged the Central and State Government to implement the International Labour Organisation’s Geneva proclamation relating to providing special benefits for fishermen. He also wanted the trade union movement to take up the fight against the entry of big monopoly companies in the retail sector. The conference passed a resolution urging the State Government to take steps to reach relief to labourers who could not go for work owing to monsoon havoc and viral fever attack.
