Coimbatore: Three-time Sri Lankan amateur champion and India’s third-ranked amateur, Simarjeet Singh, is a top contender to clinch the title in the GKD memorial Gold Cup championship, the third leg of the LG Indian amateur Golf Tour, that begins at the par-72 Coimbatore Golf Club course here on Tuesday. The absence of India’s No. 1 amateur and defending champion, Anirban Lahiri, will certainly be felt. “It’s going to be tough when it comes to scoring because the course is playing pretty longer than before,” said Simarjeet, who finished runner-up in the LG Southern India amateur championship in Bangalore last week. Lahiri preferred to stay out in order to concentrate on the Nomura Cup trials scheduled for New Delhi from July 3 to 11. In the absence of Lahiri, the other top ranked amateurs such as Jasjeet Singh, Gagan Verma, Raj Randhawa, H.S. Kang, Vikram Rana and Abhishek Jha are expected to give Simarjeet a run for his money. Amanjyot Singh, who won the Southern India junior championship here recently, is also fully geared up to challenge the seasoned amateurs. The Sri Lankan duo of Mithun Perera and K. Prabagaran will also look to come up with good performances. The latter was the winner of the all-India amateur championship here last season. — Sports Reporter
