Atwal finishes tied 29th, Mahan wins

Atwal comes up with his best round of the season
Picks up $39,900 for his effort

Cromwell (U.S.): Arjun Atwal shot his best round of the season, a stunning six-under 64, as he jumped to a tied 29th place finish at the Travelers Championship in the United States.

Atwal, who made his first cut in six starts, picked up $39,900 which will boost his confidence after a struggle last season and for most part of this year.

Meanwhile, Hunter Mahan (65) birdied the 18th hole twice in 20 minutes to win the first PGA Tour title.

He beat Jay Williamson with a birdie on the first play-off hole after both players hit great approach shots.

On fire

Atwal was on fire as he birdied the first and second holes before dropping a shot on third. He then added a birdie on sixth and turned in two-under.

On the back nine, he birdied 10th, 11th, 13th and 15th before parring the remaining three holes for a superb 64, the best round of the day.

In the only other cut Atwal made on PGA Tour this season, he was tied 36th at the AT & T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

He has also played six events on the Nationwide Tour and made cut in all of them, including a top-10 and two other top-20 finishes.

Mahan finished second in the tournament last year and shot a 62 on the same course to take a first-round lead.

Trailing

He was trailing Williamson, a 40-year-old playing only his second Tour event this season, by a shot when he reached the 72nd hole.

Williamson hit a 161-yard second shot to within 12 feet, much to the appreciation of the gallery.

Then Mahan hit a 144-yard approach to within seven feet.

Williamson missed his putt and Mahan holed it to send the contest into a play-off.

There Williamson hit his second shot to just over seven feet from the cup. Mahan then hit his 134-yard approach to within two feet.

Williamson’s putt stayed above ground while that from Mahan sank to give him the title.

Nick O’Hern shot a 66 yesterday to finish at 11-under, good enough for third place. Vijay Singh shot a 65 and finished fourth. — PTI
