Blair to be West Asia envoy?

Hasan Suroor

LONDON: Tony Blair is widely tipped to become a peace envoy to West Asia representing the Quartet group, comprising the United Nations, America, the European Union and Russia, after he leaves office on Wednesday.

The post has been vacant since the previous envoy James Wolfensohn, a former World Bank chief, resigned last year.

The proposal, first mooted by the Bush administration, is reported to have the backing of E.U., Israel and the Palestinian Fatah leadership but, crucially, Russia has not yet made its views known. Mr. Blair himself is said to “very keen” on the job.
