Mamata calls for consensus on Kalam

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Monday urged both the United Progressive Alliance and the National Democratic Alliance (of which her party is a constituent) to rise above their differences over the presidential race, withdraw their candidates, and agree on President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam as a consensus candidate for a second term.

Addressing a rally here, Ms. Banerjee said if the two major political combines could agree on a single candidate it “would send a strong message to the whole world and as this is the age of science and technology Mr. Kalam alone fits the bill.”
