Mass marriages to be performed on August 26 in Kadapa

Staff Reporter

Kalyanamasthu: TTD Chairman B. Karunakar Reddy and Kadapa ZP Chairperson D. Jyothi Reddy blessing a couple at Kadapa Kalakshetram on Monday.

KADAPA: Free mass marriages will be performed on August 26, between 11.10 a.m. and 11.20 a.m. in Sravana nakshatram under `Kalyamastu’ programme as part of efforts to safeguard ancient Hindu culture and traditions and enliven the poor, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams Chairman B. Karunakar Reddy said on Monday.

Addressing an awareness meet with public representatives on `Kalyanamastu’ at Kalakshetram here, he said patronage for Vedas, that preached oneness of human beings and spread immense knowledge, was on the downtrend due to onslaught of foreign culture and globalisation.

Vedas were misused by vested interests in the middle age and distanced them from the common man, he said. The trend has to be reversed, he said.

Though all human beings were one in the eyes of God, the workforce which constituted a majority were dubbed as untouchables and housed them on the outskirts, which was a historical fact, Mr. Karunakar Reddy said.

Joyful marriage was becoming burdensome to the poor on accounts of expenses involved and debts, he stated.

Hence TTD started Kalyanamastu Trust and perform marriages of poor on the advice of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

The free marriages would be performed in all TTD Kalyana Mantapams and select temples in the State.

Forty thousand temples in the State were being linked to TTD. Bhajan mandalis were being formed in villages to guide youth in the right direction, he said.

Fewer couples participated in the first phase of Kalyanamastu, he said and wanted all poor families enlightened on the programme.

Kadapa MP Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy, ZP chairperson D. Jyothi Reddy, Mayor P. Ravindranath Reddy urged poor to utilise this opportunity.
