Panel to resolve rotational reservation issue

Staff Reporter

PUDUKOTTAI: The State Government has appointed a high-level committee to resolve problems and discrepancies in the rotational reservation system for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes etc in local bodies, Local Administration Minister M. K. Stalin has said.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, Mr. Stalin said elections could not be held in many local bodies as the rotational reservation system was found to be inconsistent with local conditions, resulting in non-filing of nominations. Even byelections could not be conducted in these places for the same reason. The Government has appointed a committee to iron out these issues, Mr. Stalin said.

Local bodies

He, however, said a decision on the rotational reservation in these local bodies would be taken up only after the Delimitation Commission completed its sittings and finalised the process.

It was for this reason that even the orders for upgrading the Tiruppur Municipality into a corporation had been withheld.

Claiming that the performance of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government had gone down well with the electorate of Tamil Nadu, the Minister expressed confidence that the party-supported candidate would win the byelection to the Madurai West Assembly constituency.
