HYDERABAD: A debt-ridden couple reportedly administered poison to their three daughters before ending their lives by consuming it in Jubilee Hills on Sunday night.
Doctors said that while two girls, Monica, 14, and Priyanka, 11, were out of danger, the condition of Padma, 9, was critical. Venkataramana Chary, 34, and his wife Rama Devi, 31, of Rahamathnagar, reportedly offered butter laced with suspected poison to their daughters in their house on Sunday evening.
While the couple and their two younger daughters fell unconscious after consuming the butter, Monica vomited. Recovering from the sickness, the teenaged girl ran to the house of her maternal uncle Manohar in the same locality.
He shifted all of them to Gandhi Hospital where the couple was pronounced brought dead. Jubilee Hills police said Chary was neck-deep in debts and that he had wound up his jewellery shop after suffering losses. Later, he began a jewellery polishing shop in Borabanda.
With no income sources, he allegedly began taking gold from known persons on the pretext of making ornaments but sold it for his needs.
Police suspect that financial problems could have driven the couple to the drastic act.
