Bandh call: tight security

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: Security has been tightened in south Orissa due to the economic blockade call given by Maoists on Tuesday.

Extra watch is being kept on the areas bordering naxal-prone areas of Andhra Pradesh and Chatisgarh. Maoists have given this economic blockade call protesting displacement of people due to industrial projects.

Police forces are extra cautious for this economic blockade call as on June 21 night, suspected Maoists killed three persons, including a contractor in Deogarh district. This incident coincided with another incident of Maoist violence in Koraput district. They blasted a railway engine at Darliput railway station. It is suspected that the Maoists may plan similar acts to disrupt railway and road transportation in Koraput, Rayagada, Malkangiri and Gajapati districts of south Orissa.

The Maoists have distributed a release in relation to their recent call. They have appealed to general public to participate in their blockade and have asked transporters to keep their trucks off road on June 26. In this press release sent to newsmen of south Orissa they have cited examples of Maikancha, Kalinganagar killings, and displacement plans for Industries by Posco and Vedanta. They say capitalists are out to evict poor from their land in Orissa to loot its mineral resources.

They criticised both the Central and the State Governments for favouring the multinational companies by providing them land at the cost of livelihood of the poor.
