KOZHIKODE: A Footwear Design and Development Centre (FDDC) has been set up here under the Kozhikode district unit of the Kerala State Small Industries’ Association (KSSIA) with a view to providing modernised techniques to footwear manufacturing units. The initiative involves both small and big manufacturers in the footwear sector. The KSSIA proposes to develop the FDDC into a major facility that will provide inputs to manufacturers on the latest techniques and modern trends in the field. The objective is to develop the footwear industry in the State to international standards and for export, M. Khalid, president, Kozhikode district unit of the KSSIA, said in a release. The Chennai-based Central Leather Research Institute, a Union Government organisation, will provide technical know-how and financial assistance to the FDDC. It will be developed as a training centre as there is a dearth of trained and skilled workers in the footwear manufacture field. The courses ranging from two months to two years in duration will provide training in design and grading. The FDDC will function from the V.K.C. Building in Cheruvannur-Nallalam grama panchayat, the centre of the footwear manufacturing industry in the district. V.K.C. Mammad Koya, State vice-president, KSSIA, inaugurated the centre at a programme here. Mr. Khalid presided. V. Noushad, chairman and P. Jishi, secretary, were present.
