Ease congestion: Passengers squatting on the track at Ayanpuram station on Monday.
THANJAVUR: Irate commuters detained the Mayiladuturai-Tiruchi diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) passenger train for more than two hours at Ayanavaram station, near Thanjavur, on Monday morning demanding attachment of more coaches. As soon as the train reached Ayanavarayam in the Thanjavur-Tiruchi section at 8.18 a.m., the passengers squatted on the track and staged a dharna. On receiving information, the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Thiruvaiyuaru, B. Ilambaruthi, visited the spot and pacified the agitators. Later, he contacted the Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi, who assured to sort out the issue within 10 days. Following the assurance, passengers withdrew their stir and allowed the train to continue its journey. The travelling people complain that more than 16 coaches of the Thanjavur-Mysore Express were operated as a passenger train between Thanjavur and Tiruchi for the benefit of office-goers and students. Following the extension of the Mysore Express to Kumbakonam and later to Mayiladuturai, the Railways introduced the DEMU unit, comprising nine coaches in the Thanjavur-Tiruchi section. With the completion of the BG conversion work, the DEMU was extended up to Mayiladuturai. All the compartments are jampacked and a majority of the people have to travel standing from Thanjavur to Tiruchi.
