Union Health Ministry advises college based on MCI report

CUTTACK: Based on a report of the executive committee of Medical Council of India (MCI), the Union Health Ministry has advised the SCB medical college here not to admit any fresh batch of MBBS students against the increased intake during the current academic year.

In a letter to the State Health Ministry and to the Utkal University, an official of the Central Ministry has informed that a team of MCI in the college carried out a compliance verification inspection in March this year. Based on the team’s report, the executive committee of the Council noted ‘deficiencies’ in teaching staff, nursing staff and other infrastructure lacunae.

“Hence, it has been decided by the ministry not to recommend for renewal of permission for admission of fresh batch of students against the increased intake from 107 to 150 in 2007-08 academic session,” the letter said.

Poor facilities

“The fact that the college failed to provide requisite facilities as per MCI norms it (the college) is further requested to attend the deficiencies pointed out in the inspection report of MCI,” the letter said. The college however has been asked to meet the requirements immediately and compliance there to may be sent to Union Health Ministry at the appropriate time for consideration of matter for renewal of permission in the next academic year.

It may be mentioned here that the SCB medical college was allowed to increase its MBBS seats from 107 to 150 in 2006-07 academic year.

The MCI permission was conditional asking the college to meet the MCI norms every year and seek renewal of permission every year till five years.

The MCI had also allowed the college to increase the seats in 2003-04 academic sessions but the same was withdrawn for next two consecutive academic years citing the same reasons.
