Kuvempu University signs MoU with Ghent University
Centre to be made Academy of Social Sciences

SHIMOGA: Kuvempu University has entered into an agreement with Ghent University of Belgium to set up a Centre for Study of Local Cultures (CSLC), which is proposed to be subsequently converted into Karnataka Academy of Social Sciences and Humanities (KASSH) with its jurisdiction over eight universities in the State.

The first memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the CSLC was signed by Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University B.S. Sherigara and the then Registrar Shivanna on behalf of the university and a team from Ghent University led by Head of the Department of Science of Comparative Cultures Balagangadhar Rao, who is its rector, four months ago at the latter university. The second memorandum of understanding is expected to be signed between Ghent University and the State Government on sharing the cost of the academy equally every year for the next 10 years.

The State Government is reported to have agreed in principle to allocate yearly matching grant, which is expected to be Rs. 4.5 crore, for 10 years. Ghent University has agreed to release its share of matching grant.

A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the Inter-University Board (IUB) held in Bangalore on Sunday under the Chairmanship of Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy, according to reports received here.

The Minister and the Vice-Chancellors, who attended the meeting, appreciated the initiative taken by Kuvempu University in getting a major project sanctioned after Kaushik Mukherjee, Principal Secretary, Higher Education , explained its significance.

Though the academy will be located on the premises of Kuvempu University, it will have close links with all the universities in the State, providing for exchange of experts from one university to the other.

It will arrange for exchange of study groups between the universities of the State and Ghent University.
