Blackout in Bijapur district

Maoists blow up two electricity towers in Chhattisgarh

Raipur: Maoists blew up two electricity towers in the Bastar region plunging the entire Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh into darkness, officials said on Monday. “The Maoists landmined two electricity towers in Bhairamgarh jungle, about 550 km from the State capital, triggering a blackout in the district since last night [Sunday night],” officials told PTI from the district headquarters. The tower was blown up in the Bhairamgarh jungle, located on a difficult terrain, due to which power restoration might take time, they said.

On June 1, the naxalites had blasted three high tension towers pushing the entire Bastar region into darkness for 12 days.

The State incurred a loss of over Rs. 2,000 crore as mining, industrial and commercial activities were brought to a standstill.

The blast had dried up the raw material line of many steel plants from the Bailadila iron ore mines of Dantewada district. — PTI
