Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati filing her nomination papers for the Legislative Council byelection in Lucknow on Monday.

LUCKNOW: In a surprise move, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Monday filed her nomination for a byelection to the Vidhan Parishad (Upper House), caused by the death of Barkhu Ram Verma of the Bahujan Samaj Party.

Revenue Minister Swami Prasad Maurya filed his nomination for another seat, which became vacant following the death of Vikramaditya Pandey of the Samajwadi Party.

The ruling party has the required numbers in the Vidhan Sabha to win the July 5 polls.

After filing her papers, Ms. Mayawati told mediapersons that she preferred to contest the Upper House by-election as she wanted to serve the entire State.

In her affidavit filed before returning officer Rajendra Prasad Pandey, Ms. Mayawati said she owned commercial and residential property worth Rs. 37.32 crore in Connaught Place and Okhla Phase I in New Delhi and Lucknow.

In Lucknow, she owned a house at 3, Nehru Road, Survey number 105, Cantonment, inclusive of 1.08 acres of land and 1,200 square metres of built-up area.

She possessed jewellery, including gold, diamonds and a silver dinner set, valued at Rs. 50.87 lakh. She had approximately Rs. 50.27 lakh in cash and her deposits in banks, other financial institutions and non-banking financial companies totalled approximately Rs. 12.88 crore.

The Chief Minister has no vehicle of her own.
