NEW DELHI: Claiming that the consequences of the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi would have been “terrifying” if the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) had not been in existence, senior BJP leader L.K. Advani on Monday asserted that the new generation must know about the “black” days of that era.

The entire country had become a prison and the Prime Minister had become a dictator (during the Emergency), he charged speaking at a symposium here on “Loktantra Sashaktikaran” organised by the Delhi BJP to mark the 32nd anniversary of the Emergency.

Claiming that Ms. Gandhi had left the British far behind in the atrocities committed, he pointed out that power supply to newspapers was disconnected. However, the unity of the Opposition parties defeated her and the roots of democracy became stronger, he added.

Accusing United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi of giving the country a “rubber stamp” Prime Minister like Manmohan Singh, the Deputy Leader of Opposition in Parliament Vijay Kumar Malhotra, said the present situation was also developing like the Emergency.

“She now wants that the President should also be a rubber stamp,” he charged
