“Purchasing delays have led to grounding of growth plan”
CHENNAI: The Chennai unit of the Sanchar Nigam Executives’ Association (SNEA) on Monday conducted a lunch-hour demonstration as part of a nationwide agitation urging Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) to expedite its GSM expansion plans in order to not lose ground to the competition.
The SNEA said though the groundwork and initial formalities were completed to add 45 million lines, the delay in placing the purchase order had led to the grounding of the massive expansion plan.
The demonstration in Chennai took place at the Flower Bazaar telephone exchange complex.
In a statement, SNEA office-bearers V. Sundar and N. Balakrishnan, said the delay in placement of purchase orders for GSM equipment was effectively jeopardising the growth of BSNL. Neither the BSNL management nor the Government had responded to the various levels of interventions by trade unions, they said.
As a result, in spite of the huge demand for cell connections, the BSNL was not in a position to meet the demand because of the non-availability of equipment. Also, despite possessing sufficient technical expertise and a good grievance redressal mechanism, the BSNL’s self-made impediments was benefiting private service providers.
The SNEA has planned a day-long dharna on June 29 to highlight the problem and intensify the stir through a series of programmes if the bottlenecks to the GSM expansion are not resolved by then.
