This Day That Age
R. Krishnan, India’s leading player, moved smoothly into round two of the men’s singles at the Wimbledon lawn tennis championships on June 25 with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory over N. Pietrangeli of Italy. Krishnan gave a splendid display of power tennis in beating one of the best players in Europe who was a quarter-finalist at Wimbledon two years ago. Pietrangeli harried Krishnan all the way, but could not counter the Indian’s tremendous first service and powerful volleying game. Narendra Nath of India was, however, eliminated by D.W. Candy of Australia, 6-3, 7-5, 6-3. An inspired Krishnan finding his magic touch made short work of Pietrangeli, winning in little less than an hour. Pietrangeli, attacking throughout the match, was consistently beaten by Krishnan’s brilliant passing shots on both flanks.
