Corrections and clarifications

  • The caption of the accompanying photograph in the lead story “Shiv Sena backs Pratibha Patil” (June 26, 2007, page 1) identified Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhra Raje to be in the group. (The caption was: “Well-Wishers All: Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat amid supporters after filing his nomination for the Presidential election at the Parliament House complex in New Delhi on Monday. From left, Bharatiya Janata Party leaders Narendra Modi, Rajnath Singh, L.K. Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Sushma Swaraj and Vasundhara Raje, and Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.”) Ms. Raje was not visible in this photograph and was standing behind Mr. Shekhawat and Mr. Patnaik.

  • The caption of the accompanying photograph “33 p.c. independent directors favoured” (“Business” page, June 26, 2007) was: “Adhering To Governance: Union Company Affairs Minister Prem Chand Gupta being welcomed by Assocham President Venugopal N. Dhoot at the National Accounting Convention-IV conference on ‘Corporate governance and financial reporting norms’, in New Delhi.” The Ministry of Company Affairs was renamed the Ministry Of Corporate Affairs vide Presidential notification dated May 9, 2007 amending the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules, 1961. Consequently, the caption should have said Union Minister for Corporate Affairs. The detail was right in the text.

  • A sentence in “Woman beaten to death” (Tamil Nadu, “Briefly”, June 26, 2007) was: “A developmently challenged woman was beaten to death ….” The right term should have been “men tally challenged” or a “person with developmental disability”.
