NEW DELHI: K. Sasikiran’s poor form continued when he lost to Spain’s Alexei Shirov in the seventh round of the Aerosvit chess tournament at Foros, Ukraine, on Monday. In the Queen’s Indian game, Sasikiran offered a rook for knight on the 22nd move but could not get a decisive attack going. After a series of exchanges, Shirov smartly kept Sasikiran’s king out of play and ensured an easy victory in 40 moves. The result saw Sasikiran slump to bottom of the table with Romanian Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu at 2.5 points. Ukraine’s Sergey Karjakin stayed at the top with five points, half a point ahead of compatriot Vassily Ivanchuk. The results (seventh round): K. Sasikiran (2.5) lost to Alexei Shirov (Esp, 4); Sergey Karjakin (Ukr, 5) bt Loek van Wely (Ned, 3); Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr, 4.5) bt Pavel Eljanov (Ukr, 3); Alexander Onischuk (USA, 3.5) drew with Lenier Dominguez Perez (Cub, 3.5); Dmitry Jakovenko (Rus, 3.5) drew with Sergie Rublvesky (Rus, 3.5); Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu (Rom, 2.5) drew with Peter Svidler (Rus, 3.5). Eighth-round pairings: Svidler-Sasikiran; Dominguez-Jakovenko; Shirov-Onischuk; Karjakin-Nisipeanu; Rublevsky-Ivanchuk; Wely-Eljanov.
