NEW DELHI: Aswin Jayaram stunned sixth-seeded Azerbaijani Grandmaster Nidjat Mamedov to hog the opening day’s limelight in the Sort International Open chess tournament in Sort, Spain, on Sunday. Another surprise came when Devangi Patankar, a former National under-11 girls’ champion, held Mamedov’s compatriot, 10th-seeded International Master Rashad Babaev. Meanwhile, at Montcada, also in Spain, lone Indian GM R.B. Ramesh suffered a shock loss at the hands of French rival Ramon Chalmeta Ugas, in the first round of the 15th Torneig International Open chess tournament. The results: First round (Indians unless stated): Julio Granda Zuniga (Per) bt Sahaj Grover; Soumya Swaminathan lost to Vladimir Burmakin (Rus); Aswin Jayaram bt Nidjat Mamedov (Aze); Stanislav Savchenko (Ukr) bt L. Iswarya Shobana; De vangi Patankar lost to Rashad Babaev (Aze); Vianney Bruned (Esp) lost to Abhijeet Gupta; Ricardo Menchon Lopez (Esp) lost to Vishal Sareen; Julio Nieto de la Cruz (Esp) lost to Tania Sachdev; Eesha Karavade received a walkover from Fernando Pozo (Esp); Raquel Pablos Tenrero (Esp) lost to Dinesh Kumar Sharma; Abhishek Das received a walkover from Xavier Farre (Esp); R. Arun Karthik bt Eloy Pera Martinez (Esp); T. Purushothaman bt Ruben Arguelles Dominguez (Esp); Yeva Kasparov (Blr) lost to Kruttika Nadig.
